What we're all about

The Deal...

indiradio is an online independent music community and radio station for artists and listeners.

What does this mean? Basically we’re the alternative to what you’re used to.

Musicians can promote themselves through rapidly-growing online communities rather than through slow, traditional methods.

Listeners can discover great new music instead of spending hours browsing through hundreds of songs.

We put together a list that explains our ethical beliefs and benefits regarding our ideal music community.

  • DRM free – You hate DRM, we hate DRM, and so we don’t use DRM.
  • No RIAA – We are not affiliated with the RIAA in ANY fashion.
  • User Driven – The musicians and the listeners, including what is played on the radio stations, power everything.
  • Support the Musicians – These people work hard to entertain and express themselves through music. Please support them by attending gigs, purchasing their albums or merchandise, or even post a comment.
  • We Want Feedback – Got a suggestion? Tell us about it! This site is for you, so let us know what you want to do with it.
  • Join the Community – We feel the love with the people who use the site, and we encourage everyone to participate in any way they can.
  • Strength in Numbers – The more users we get, the stronger we’ll become. Together we can make a difference in the music industry. Spread the word!

Our goal is to bring together musicians and listeners for a common purpose, to allow musicians to express themselves in a thriving community of music lovers without the burden of traditional media or going through major record labels to be heard.

We are the alternative, and we are the future.

How it started…

Mike first came up with a concept of an online directory of musicians, where everyone can connect with each other. This was short-lived, as there were already dozens of sites that did this. He then realized how there were few internet radio stations that targeted the independent music community, and those that did were poor at it. The concept of a website where musicians can upload music free of charge to internet radio stations was created. The problem was that he needed someone with the knowledge and expertise to develop this site as well as someone that he can trust with his ideas and shares his ethical beliefs. That person was Zach.

Zach and Mike were good friends in high school, having met through other classmates at the lunch table. At first things were a little awkward between the hippie-esque, guitar playing Zach and the shy, conservative Mike playing in the high school band. However, they found common ground with their discovery that both were born and raised in New York and have the same passion for music and computers.

By senior year, Zach and Mike went into their first business venture as web design specialists and computer consultants. After a few days of being open for business they had their first client, and a few days later they lost their first (and last) client for the company.

In 2004, Mike proposed a concept of a site for independent musicians and his ideas of internet-based radio stations to Zach. Zach was very much interested in this idea and agreed to a partnership. During this time, ideas were gathered and the more they delved into this mammoth project, the more passionate they became. The goal was clear for them on what they want to accomplish: to make a difference in the music industry. Using their passion for music and forging their skills in computers and business, indiradio became not only their business, but also their lifestyle.

Mike and Zach are still musicians and continue to perform.
